History of Sunyani Nursing Training College

The Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College was established in 1972 by the Ministry of Health with the construction of Hostel Block, Administration and one staff flat accommodation. The college which was supposed to train State Registered Nurses could not start operation and the hostel buildings were converted to nurses quarters for the Regional Hospital while the tutors’  flat given to the staff of the Regional Health Directorate with one tutors’ flat still uncompleted.
The Administrative block was later given to International Hospital Group as offices for their operations until
2004 when the new initiation was rekindled to start the college. The abandoning of the project could be
attributed to the political dispensation in Ghana at that time. The idea of the establishment was
reactivated by Alhaji Dr. Ibn Ibrahim the Regional Director of Health Services for Brong Ahafo Region after
32 years of hibernation. The committee that saw to the establishment included Dr. Daniel Asare (Medical
Director of Regional Hospital), Mr.Ibrahim Issa (Regional Health Services Administrator), Dr. George
Bonsu (SMO Public Health), Ms. Alice Braimah (DDNS Regional), Ms Faustina Nyarko (DDNS Regional
Hospital), Ms Theodora Okyere (PNO In-Service Unit), Mr. Francis Ayamga (SNO Regional Hospital), Ms.
Cordelia Yeboah Yeboaa (PNO Regional Hospital),Ms. Grace S. Papanko (SNO Regional Hospital), Mr.
Frank Adetor (Regional Human Resource), Mr. Alex Amenu (Regional Hospital Administrator).
The college became operational in 1st October after it has received accreditation from the Nurses and
Midwives Council for Ghana. The Ministry of health appointed Mr. Francis Omono-Asamoah then a tutor of
the Berekum Nurses Training College as the Principal of the college.
The college started with only one tutor Miss Georgina Sam but was later joined by another tutor Mr.
Foster Nyarko in January 2005.
The first batch of students were made up of 21 male and 19 female students.
The students were accommodated in the Mothers’ hostel of the New Regional hospital which we are still
occupying courtesy Dr. Daniel Asare, the medical Director.
Feeding of the students started one month after the reopening of the college with a loan of thirty million
cedis from the regional hospital to purchase cooking utensils and gas.
The smooth running of the college was supported by Director of Rural Health Training school with the
release of a 33-seater bus to the college.
In October 2006, the school population was increased to one hundred and forty (140). In October 2007
another eighty students were admitted into the college. The teaching staff has also increased to eight and
