KNUST COMMISSIONS ACCRA CITY CAMPUS & IDL CENTRE
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has commissioned the Accra City Campus(Kwabenya) and IDL Centre. The project which commenced in December, 2012 was completed at an estimated cost of Ten Million Five Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,500,000.00). The six-storey edifice and its basement has nine150-seater lecture halls, 120-seater computer and server rooms with several offices and additional two bed sitters within the office block.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice-Chancellor, mentioned that in fulfilling the university’s initiative of “bringing KNUST closer to the doorstep of students”, the authorities had implemented series of programmes and initiatives to offer more opportunities to prospective students. In tandem to this, the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) was restructured in 2005 to offer a complementary platform to the normal conventional lecture room sessions which was delivered on the main campus of the university in Kumasi. The IDL currently runs 17 undergraduate and 13 postgraduate programmes with a student population of about 10,000 in 13 different centres across Ghana. The institute also has two offshore pilot virtual campuses; one in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a recent one in Nigeria.
